The zonation of non-breeding waterbirds along the Schelde estuary (The Netherlands-Belgium), one of the longest estuaries in NW-Europe with still a complete salinity gradient, including a large freshwater tidal area, was described. Numbers of birds were counted monthly over the period October 1991 to June 1997. Highest numbers of waterbirds were observed in late autumn and winter, with annual peak numbers ranging between 150,000 and 235,000 individuals for the whole estuary. Based on a multivariate analysis different waterbird communities were observed along the salinity gradient. The polyhaline areas of the estuary were numerically dominated by the waders Oystercatcher and Dunlin. Due to the presence of a large brackish marsh in the mesohaline zone, the... |

The primary objective of the EC-MAST III project PROMISE (Pre-Operational Modelling In the Seas of Europe) is to develop a framework to optimize the application of existing pre-operational dynamical models of the North Sea in order to quantify the rates and scales of the exchange of sediments between the coast and the near-shore zone. This framework should also be applicable to other coastal areas and for broader management applications. One of the components of this framework is the development and the dissemination of a spectra! wave model capable of dealing with shallow water conditions and with the interaction between tide and waves. At the beginning of the project, it was opted to improve the capabilities of the WAM-Cycle 4 model, a model which is... |

Caswell and Hastings (1980) introduced an explicit model for the relative merits, in terms of growth rate <i>lambda</i>, of developmental shifts vs. fecundity increases. Some aspects of their model are clarified by concentrating on the (fitness >1) half-plane rather than on the (accelerated reproduction) half-plane. There is no strict equivalence between Caswell and Hastings' key parameter <i>lambda/P</i> and the dynamic behaviour of the population which is governed by <i>lambda</i>. Thus in some stationary/declining populations time shifts of reproduction (forward or backward, according to the value of <i>lambda/P</i>) are just as effective in promoting a high <i>lambda</i> as they are in... |

The atmosphere sees the ocean, with sometimes huge waves, as a much smoother surface, compared to its passage over land where it is slowed down much more, even if obstacles are small compared to the size of ocean waves. A good observer notices right away that waves travel with the wind and consequently do not give much resistance. The details of how much resistance there actually is and its variation with wind speed and parameters defining the wave conditions has been a hot topic for the last 35 years. The correctness of the roughness formulation is a crucial question in the understanding of the air-sea interface. It has major implications in wave modelling, in storm surge modelling and also in modelling of the atmospheric boundary layer above the ocean.... |

The distribution of phytoplankton and zooplankton around three sandbanks (Gootebank, Westhinder and Buitenratel sandbank) off the Belgian Coast was investigated in February 1994. The abundance of phytoplankton taxa was significantly different between the sandbanks. Community analysis using TWINSPAN resulted in a clear separation of clusters corresponding to the different sandbanks. The zooplankton community analysis, on the contrary, showed a rather indistinctive division of the sandbank stations. This was due to the omnipresence of three dominant copepod species (<i>Temora longicornis, Pseudocalanus elongatus</i> and <i>Centropages hamatus</i>). When these species were excluded from the analysis, a clearer distinction between the... |

Soil samples from a nature reserve for indigenous animals in Uruguay yielded one new and two known <i>Xiphodorus</i> species and one new <i>Paraxiphidorus</i> species. The new <i>Xiphidorus</i> is described as <i>X. uruguayensis</i> n. sp. It can be distinguished from other <i>Xiphidorus</i> species by its large body size, cylindrical anterior end offset from the remainder of the body by a sudden expansion of the latter and by its barrel- to heart-shaped amphid with small slit-like aperture. The other species found were <i>X. balcarceanus</i> Chaves & Coomans, 1984 and <i>X. minor</i> Rashid, Coomans & Sharma, 1986. The new <i>Paraxiphidorus</i> species,... |

An extensive program of tracer experiments was carried out for calculating sediment transport in the vicinity of the Port of Zeebrugge where extension operations are in progress. Offshore radioactive bottom tracers were used for studying the sand transport along the beaches where erosion problems exist. On the beach itself fluorescent tracers were used. For the evaluation of the silting-up rate of the access channels to the harbour a series of radioactive bottom and suspension tracers were tracked <i>in situ</i>. For determining the efficiency of future dumping grounds a combination of bottom tracers and suspension tracers was used. In total, 18 experiments with radioactive tracers were carried out and 9 with fluorescent ones. |
