Water quality modelling of the western Scheldt estuary OMA
Ouboter, M.R.L.; Van Eck, B.T.M.; Van Gils, J.A.G.; Sweerts, J.P.; Villars, M.T..
1n 1987 the National Institute for Coastal and Marine Management (the Netherlands) initiated the SAWES project (Systems Analysis WEstern Scheldt). The main goals of the project were to acquire knowledge with respect to the pollution problems in the Scheldt estuary and to apply this knowledge to management issues of the Scheldt on an operational level. The main interest was to understand quantitatively the relation between inputs of polluting substances and effects on the ecosystem. In the framework of the project, a water quality model for the Scheldt estuary was made. In 1995, the model area was expanded to include the Belgian coastal region at the mouth of the estuary. The model calculates the fate of discharged substances and establishes the relation...

Waterbird communities along the estuarine salinity gradient of the Schelde estuary, NW-Europe OMA
Ysebaert, T.; Meininger, P.L.M.; Meire, P.; Devos, K.; Berrevoets, C.M.; Strucker, R.C.W.; Kuijken, E..
The zonation of non-breeding waterbirds along the Schelde estuary (The Netherlands-Belgium), one of the longest estuaries in NW-Europe with still a complete salinity gradient, including a large freshwater tidal area, was described. Numbers of birds were counted monthly over the period October 1991 to June 1997. Highest numbers of waterbirds were observed in late autumn and winter, with annual peak numbers ranging between 150,000 and 235,000 individuals for the whole estuary. Based on a multivariate analysis different waterbird communities were observed along the salinity gradient. The polyhaline areas of the estuary were numerically dominated by the waders Oystercatcher and Dunlin. Due to the presence of a large brackish marsh in the mesohaline zone, the...

Waterboatmen, and testing for Lotka-Volterra-type interactions OMA
Bergmans, M..
A previous paper by Istock, in which this author claims to have successfully applied the Lotka-Volterra model to his observations on corixid population dynamics, is criticised for the shortcomings in evidence cited to support the model's fit with the data. It is contended that the dynamic behaviour of the system of Hesperocorixa lobata - Sigara macropala interaction is not in accordance with the Lotka-Volterra model. ThIs brief critique is followed by comments by istock in reply to the points raised in Bergmans' letter.

Wave modelling in the PROMISE project OMA
Monbaliu, J.; Hargreaves, J.C.; Carretero, J.-C.; Gerritsen, H.; Flather, R..
The primary objective of the EC-MAST III project PROMISE (Pre-Operational Modelling In the Seas of Europe) is to develop a framework to optimize the application of existing pre-operational dynamical models of the North Sea in order to quantify the rates and scales of the exchange of sediments between the coast and the near-shore zone. This framework should also be applicable to other coastal areas and for broader management applications. One of the components of this framework is the development and the dissemination of a spectra! wave model capable of dealing with shallow water conditions and with the interaction between tide and waves. At the beginning of the project, it was opted to improve the capabilities of the WAM-Cycle 4 model, a model which is...

When <i>m</i>-selection? OMA
Bergmans, M..
Caswell and Hastings (1980) introduced an explicit model for the relative merits, in terms of growth rate <i>lambda</i>, of developmental shifts vs. fecundity increases. Some aspects of their model are clarified by concentrating on the (fitness >1) half-plane rather than on the (accelerated reproduction) half-plane. There is no strict equivalence between Caswell and Hastings' key parameter <i>lambda/P</i> and the dynamic behaviour of the population which is governed by <i>lambda</i>. Thus in some stationary/declining populations time shifts of reproduction (forward or backward, according to the value of <i>lambda/P</i>) are just as effective in promoting a high <i>lambda</i> as they are in...

Wind en golven: onderzoek van een optimaliserings-benadering voor het schatten van parameters in de brontermen = Wind and waves: investigation of an optimization approach to parameter estimation OMA
Monbaliu, J..
The atmosphere sees the ocean, with sometimes huge waves, as a much smoother surface, compared to its passage over land where it is slowed down much more, even if obstacles are small compared to the size of ocean waves. A good observer notices right away that waves travel with the wind and consequently do not give much resistance. The details of how much resistance there actually is and its variation with wind speed and parameters defining the wave conditions has been a hot topic for the last 35 years. The correctness of the roughness formulation is a crucial question in the understanding of the air-sea interface. It has major implications in wave modelling, in storm surge modelling and also in modelling of the atmospheric boundary layer above the ocean....

Wind wave modelling in shallow water: with application to the southern North Sea OMA
Luo, W..
Increased marine activities, particularly in areas of off-shore exploitation and coastal development, have created an urgent need for improved knowledge of wave conditions in the shallow near-shore regions. In this work, objectives have been made to investigate the effects of bottom friction, depth-induced wave breaking, and tidal motions on the wave evolution in shallow water, and to apply the wave model (WAM Cycle 4) to the Belgian coastal waters. Firstly, the effects of different bottom friction formulations on the energy balance equation were quantitatively investigated for fetch-limited shallow water conditions. It was found that the formulation of the bottom friction dissipation has a quite significant effect on the energy balance at shallower water...

Winter distribution of phytoplankton and zooplankton around some sandbanks of the Belgian coastal zone OMA
M'harzi, A.; Tackx, M.L.; Daro, M.H.; Kesaulia, I.; Caturao, R.; Podoor, N..
The distribution of phytoplankton and zooplankton around three sandbanks (Gootebank, Westhinder and Buitenratel sandbank) off the Belgian Coast was investigated in February 1994. The abundance of phytoplankton taxa was significantly different between the sandbanks. Community analysis using TWINSPAN resulted in a clear separation of clusters corresponding to the different sandbanks. The zooplankton community analysis, on the contrary, showed a rather indistinctive division of the sandbank stations. This was due to the omnipresence of three dominant copepod species (<i>Temora longicornis, Pseudocalanus elongatus</i> and <i>Centropages hamatus</i>). When these species were excluded from the analysis, a clearer distinction between the...

Xiphidorini (Nematoda: Longidoridae) from Uruguay OMA
Coomans, A.; Chaves, E.; De León, L. L..
Soil samples from a nature reserve for indigenous animals in Uruguay yielded one new and two known <i>Xiphodorus</i> species and one new <i>Paraxiphidorus</i> species. The new <i>Xiphidorus</i> is described as <i>X. uruguayensis</i> n. sp. It can be distinguished from other <i>Xiphidorus</i> species by its large body size, cylindrical anterior end offset from the remainder of the body by a sudden expansion of the latter and by its barrel- to heart-shaped amphid with small slit-like aperture. The other species found were <i>X. balcarceanus</i> Chaves & Coomans, 1984 and <i>X. minor</i> Rashid, Coomans & Sharma, 1986. The new <i>Paraxiphidorus</i> species,...

Zeebrugge Port extension sediment transport: measurement on and off the Belgian coast by means of tracers OMA
Bastin, A.; Malherbe, B.; Caillot, A..
An extensive program of tracer experiments was carried out for calculating sediment transport in the vicinity of the Port of Zeebrugge where extension operations are in progress. Offshore radioactive bottom tracers were used for studying the sand transport along the beaches where erosion problems exist. On the beach itself fluorescent tracers were used. For the evaluation of the silting-up rate of the access channels to the harbour a series of radioactive bottom and suspension tracers were tracked <i>in situ</i>. For determining the efficiency of future dumping grounds a combination of bottom tracers and suspension tracers was used. In total, 18 experiments with radioactive tracers were carried out and 9 with fluorescent ones.

Zonation and structuring factors of meiofauna communities in a tropical seagrass bed (Gazi Bay, Kenya) OMA
De Troch, M.; Gurdebeke, S.; Fiers, F.; Vincx, M..
This study deals with the relation between tropical meiofauna and environmental variables by comparing the 'benthic' (i.e. in the bare sediment adjacent to seagrass plants) and the 'epiphytic' (i.e. in samples including seagrass plants) meiofauna associated with five seagrass species from the high intertidal to the high subtidal zone in Gazi Bay (Kenya). Ordination and variance analysis revealed three distinct 'benthic' and two 'epiphytic' meiofauna assemblages. These assemblages corresponded entirely with those identified for the seagrass species: a high intertidal pioneer association (<i>Halophila ovalis/Halodule wrightii</i>), an intertidal climax assemblage (<i>Thalassia hemprichii</i>) and a high subtidal pioneer association...

Zooplankton grazing pressure in the Oosterschelde (the Netherlands) OMA
Tackx, M.; Bakker, C.; Van Rijswijk, P..
Grazing activity by the dominant zooplankton species in the Oosterschelde (SW Netherlands) was studied as part of an ecological survey accompanying the construction of a storm-surge barrier at the mouth of this tidal inlet. At station WEST, situated at the mouth, potential grazing pressure by the zooplankton amounted to 6% d-1 of the phytoplankton standing stock and 18% of the primary production. At station EAST, in the inland part, 16% of the phytoplankton standing stock and 11% of the primary production was potentially consumed daily. Because the dominant zooplankton species in the inland part (<i>Acartia</i> spp. and cirriped nauplii) tended to feed more on small particles than the dominant species in the seaward part...
